Shelter Buddies Reading Program

READ TO THE SHELTER CATS

Shelter Buddies is a year-round reading program for students in K-5th grade. Registered students can sign-up for 30-minute reading sessions with our adorable shelter cats and earn prizes for every five sessions they complete.

Children will read to the shelter cats in designated cat colony rooms.

  • Click on the button to open a fillable form, complete it and save it. Email it using the button below or come to the shelter to complete an application form.

  • Program hours are limited to:

  • Tuesday - Saturday between

2 pm – 5 pm (Check back as times will change soon).

  • Reading sessions are available year-round at the AVHS Animal Shelter, 4910 A St SE, Auburn 98092

The program not only benefits the reader but the cats as well. These visits provide cats in our care with some time to socialize in a relaxing, comfortable environment while the students get in some reading practice. Reading aloud can be a great confidence booster and the cats don’t mind at all if you make a mistake!

A study conducted by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine showed that reading to a pet improved reading fluency as 30% and 75% of parents reported their children to read aloud more often and with greater confidence.

Applications for the program will be accepted as we have space available. If there is no space when you apply you can be added to a waitlist.
