GiveBIG 2025

On May 6-7, 2025, Auburn Valley Humane Society will participate in GiveBIG - a two-day online giving event to raise funds for nonprofit organizations serving Washington State.

For 12 years, AVHS has been working tirelessly to provide food, shelter, and medical and dental care for every animal that comes through our doors. During that time, we raised over $98,000 through GiveBIG, helping to save more than 15,000 animals.

YOUR support is KEY to helping us continue to improve the lives of thousands of homeless animals each year. This year more than ever, we need you to GiveBIG.

2025 GOAL: $14,000

Our goal is to raise $14,000, which will feed, spay, neuter, vaccinate, and microchip 25 animals. At AVHS, we provide our animals with a physical exam, vaccinations, spay or neuter services, microchips, and, in some cases, extensive medical and dental care before adoption to a loving family.

One anonymous donor will match gifts up to $5,000 so your donation is being twice matched! Your support is needed for us to reach our goal to continue our lifesaving efforts!

Smudge was one of the lucky ones to arrive at Auburn Valley Humane Society. She was able to get the care that she so desperately needed, but there are so many others like her. It costs $885 to care & treat an animal before it gets adopted!

Because of your generosity and kindness, AVHS & NWSNC can feed, shelter, provide basic medical and dental care, and provide low-cost spay/neuter, dentistry, and wellness services to animals in need in our community!

$15 provides enrichment toys or treats for shelter animals
$100 provides nutritious formula, food, warming discs, bottles, and a scale to infant kittens and puppies growing up in foster care
$250 supports the life of a senior dog and helps with their medications and special foods
$500 supports animal lifesaving care for five dogs from underserved and overpopulated animal shelters
$1000 provides for the cost of spay/neuter for five cats or dogs, reducing overpopulation and eliminating the risk of certain cancers

Smudge's Story

smudge's Story

A two-year-old mom cat, Smudge, was only 9 pounds when she arrived at the shelter in mid-winter. Small in size, she arrived with five two-day-old neonates. Smudge needed medical care and food to help her nursing condition. The veterinary staff provided extraordinary care and quickly found a great foster.

Overnight, Smudge had a sixth kitten at the foster home. This amazing foster was able to assist Smudge when needed with the new kitten. Smudge was a great mom cat and took care of the little ones.

Fosters are critical with helping mom cat and kittens to grow healthy. Smudge needed extra food and vitamins to nurse her little ones. The foster weighs the kittens daily and maintains weight charts. Other information or concerns are reported by the foster to the veterinary staff. With a nursing mom cat, the foster lets Smudge take care of her litter. Smudge, however, needed a break from the kittens, and would sit with the fosters for pets and attention. She became very friendly.

Every two weeks, the kittens would return to the shelter for a healthy exam visit and get their first vaccinations and other preventative medicine treatments. Once the kittens were weaned at about 4-5 weeks old, Smudge would be scheduled for her spay surgery and return to the shelter for her adoption. The kittens would stay with the foster family to be socialized, grow healthier, play and become super friendly as they waited for their surgery when they were 8-10 weeks old.

Smudge was adopted shortly after healing from her surgery. The kittens will be coming up for adoption at the shelter and cat cafe. The kittens were Basil, Fern, Indigo, Violet, Daisy and Aloe. Your gift will help to save more lives and help our vulnerable animals in the community. Give them a healthy start to the future!

Penny's Story

In mid-January, a good Samaritan brought Penny, a slightly overweight, senior dachshund mix, to the shelter. Penny was very sick and in poor health, requiring hospitalization. Our dedicated veterinary medical staff made her comfortable with soft bedding. She was suffering from bloody diarrhea, lethargy, muscle wasting near her spine, and hardly being able to walk. Her swollen abdomen indicated that she needed the best care possible at AVHS. The staff provided her with tender, loving care during her stay at the shelter.

Penny was estimated to be around 12 years old and became friendlier as her treatment progressed. She had bladder stones and required surgery, but first, she needed to be stabilized from the diarrhea. With fluids, medication, and a specially formulated urinary wet food, Penny's condition began to improve. She faced multiple health issues, including dental disease, aging, and a heart murmur.

Fortunately, Penny had already been spayed, but she desperately needed surgery to remove the bladder stones. X-rays revealed that she had not just one but eight stones, each roughly the size of a cherry pit! This must have been quite painful for her. A skilled veterinarian successfully removed the stones, and Penny’s demeanor changed for the better. A foster home was found, and Penny started to recover and heal. The foster family fell in love with her and expressed a desire to adopt her when the time was right.

Before her adoption, Penny needed dental work due to significant tartar buildup, periodontal disease, and several missing teeth. A collaboration with a local veterinary hospital allowed for complimentary dental care and cleaning. After the procedure, Penny returned to her foster home to continue the healing process. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the commitment of fosters, Penny received the care she desperately needed. She is expected to be adopted in early May and will enjoy a relaxing life as she ages.
