Challah’s Story

It all started when…

A stray dog, Scrump, arrived at the Auburn Valley Humane Society animal shelter in late October.

She was a senior small mixed breed dog with a severe inflammation in her mouth. Fortunately, our skilled veterinarian and medical staff quickly placed a feeding tube in her to ensure she could receive oral steroids. She was able to get the care and diagnostics for her small 7-year-old body. Her outcome was questionable but she was able to eat and receive medications. The extraordinary care was made possible by DONORS like YOU. Your support is critical in helping animals like Scrump take the steps to a second chance.

Scrump needed lots of hospital time and biopsies to get a rare condition, stomatitis, diagnosed. She would need long-term medication and care in order to manage her inflammation. Her long-term care would be expensive and not something most adopters could afford. She was cute but the long-term medical care might be a barrier to her adoption.

A wonderful couple meet Scrump and chatted with our veterinarian to learn about Scrump’s history. They fell in love and decided to adopt her understanding of the needs and plan for her continued medical plan.

After being adopted, Challah (formerly Scrump) waggled her way into everyone’s hearts. She has learned to sit, stay, come and to walk on a leash. She’s a great camping companion, loves to go for car rides and especially loves her daddy. She’s found her place with her “big” sisters and increased her energy and stamina greatly. She had extensive dental work to help with her immune disorder. The new adopters are “grateful every day that she’s part of our family.”

We need your help to continue to provide this extraordinary care. AVHS staff examines animals daily that are beyond the scope of imagination. Many animals come to us with injuries, illness, or just old like Scrump. They are desperate to have someone to love them. But none of our lifesaving work would be possible without our donors. We are reliant on the generosity of our community to continue this vital work. Please consider donating to strengthen our community and support animals in need.
