SENIOR DOGS AT AUBURN VALLEY HUMANE SOCIETY FETCH GRANT
AUBURN – Old dogs have something to wag about this summer, as The Grey Muzzle Organization announces the recipients of its annual grants, and the senior dogs at Auburn Valley Humane Society (AVHS) are among the winners.
AVHS in Auburn is one of 78 animal welfare groups chosen from 344 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs. The winning groups received more than $705,000 in grants to help save or improve the lives of at-risk old dogs in their communities.
“This grant will allow us to assist owners and care givers of Senior Dogs with resources to cover the costs of crucial veterinary care (routine or urgent) that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. The inability to afford veterinary care is often a reason for surrender,” said Tori Heath, Director of Special Programs at AVHS. “The vast majority of owners would rather treat or remedy the reason they are relinquishing their pet rather than surrender them to a shelter. If AVHS can help keep the senior dogs of its community healthy, the more likely it is that those dogs will be able to stay in their homes and never have to enter our facility.”
Over the past 14 years, the national nonprofit Grey Muzzle Organization has provided more than $3.8 million in grants to support its vision of “a world where no old dog dies alone and afraid.”
“Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re delighted to help deserving organizations like AVHS make a difference in the lives of dogs and people in their communities,” Grey Muzzle’s Executive Director Lisa Lunghofer said. “Many senior dogs in the Auburn area are enjoying their golden years in loving homes thanks to the wonderful work of AVHS.”
Trixi (pictured), a 12-year-old chihuahua, is the first dog that we have had the pleasure of supporting with our Grey Muzzle funds this year. Trixi was able to receive a dental cleaning as well as a couple of tooth extractions and is now feeling better than ever! We are so excited to be able to support our community members in need and their senior dogs.
